This book has developed from courses of lectures given by uso ver a period of years to senior undergraduates in applied mathematics and engineering science at the University of Toronto. In these lectures the methods of Fourier series and integral transforms are used to discuss the standard differential equations of mathematical physics, and it is shown that a variety of physical problems can be treated by such techniques.
We have felt the need for a text book in this course which would include a unified mathematical presentation of the eigenfunction method together with the early use of generalized functions. This book is the result of our efforts to combine these features, with some indication of the wide range of physical application of the differential equations.
